About Concordiatown

Named after the Ancient Roman goddess of social harmony, Concordiatown is a project started in 2018 to establish a free, egalitarian community, and ultimately a broad network of communities, outside the existing capitalist order.

Capitalism has us ignore the fundamental sameness of all humans in order to justify gross extremes of wealth and poverty, of domination and subservience, as the natural state of things, while it forces us into perpetual conflict under the pretense that it leads to prosperity rather than destruction. Despite the claims of its propaganda, capitalism has curtailed or destroyed the freedom and happiness of all people except, at best, the very wealthy. The way it operates ultimately upholds the interests of money and power, with all real human concerns left to chance, and any reasonable concept of human dignity left to the wayside.

Reforming or overthrowing capitalism has not shown itself to be feasible, so the only remaining option is to separate from it outright. Moreover, the threats of ecological calamity, resource depletion, and nuclear annihilation are getting worse rather than better, which requires the creation of self-sufficient communities if decent human life is to be possible in the future.

The goal of Concordiatown is to create a place where people can live as the individuals they were meant to be, not combatants in the never-ending, animalistic struggle of competition in the market. If people start to disengage from capitalism and form new, just modes of social organization, and the capitalists don't manage to destroy the whole world first, the system may fade away naturally based only on the personal volition of each individual.

The current state of things represents a tragedy beyond the imaginations of even the greatest dystopian storytellers. Available today is the most advanced knowledge and technology in history, a planet that to a large degree is still beautiful and rich with resources, and billions of people who could work toward transforming it into a utopia. And yet we are left with thousands of warheads poised to destroy everything at any moment and a population in constant conflict trying to get as much short-term, personal advantage as possible. Such a mentality can lead to only one place.
